JOHN HENSHALL the ARTIST

John Henshall was a talented and prolific artist who was born in Stockport, Cheshire, England in 1913 and died in the same town in 1996.

His work was across many media - including watercolours, oils, scraper-board, lettering and calligraphy. He was also an inspired teacher who taught many other artists and young people in the Manchester and North Wales areas.

In the early years he worked as a Committee Clerk in local government in Wakefield, Yorkshire, while devoting every other available moment to his art. During this time he held an exhibition in a local pub, "bringing art to the people". In 1949 this was so innovative that it was reported in major newspapers such as the Daily Mail, News Chronicle and Yorkshire Observer.

He turned full-time professional in 1957, moving back to Stockport and thereafter earning his livelihood entirely from his art.

This website will be expanded in the future but, in the meantime, you can read his obituary here or send us an eMail for more information.
